Tiny beams of sunlight dance through a galaxy of holes. Holes left by the shot-gun pellets that tore through the tarpaulin the night before. As the same greasy cloth jives in the cool Hudson Bay morning breeze, starry lights flicker across Detective McBride’s unshaven face...

It was Sunday. Easter Sunday. In the Year of Our Lord, 1933. But there was nothing holy about this place. Ave Ma-fricking-ria.
McBride rubbed his stinging eyes and looked over his blood-stained lapels to the pool of gasoline and rancid brandy that had been his bed for the night. Groaning, he sat up, striking a match off a sleeping elephant’s backside. He lit his cigar, inhaling deply: “What the Scarface happened?”

It all started two nights before... or 38 years later... depends how you look at things. All McBride knew was that at 0800 hours, Friday, a Ruski submarine ran aground under Brooklyn Bridge. Word on the street was the rusty Russian leviathan came from the future... maybe from another planet... planet CCCP. Who the finkelstein knew? Who the fonsworth cared? All McBride knew was that some Communist numb-nuts had run their bastard underwater machine into Don Tillettiʼs main bootleg depot on the bay, A.K.A The Riot Jazz Cafe, A.K.A. Satanʼs Cesspit... The only watering hole left in this prohibition wasteland...

At the Riot Jazz Cafe, anything was possible: a place of dreams and liquid wonderment. Where the air was thick with the smog of pumping jazz, liquor spurted like sulphuric water from demented geysers and sweat beads clung to the walls like bats on Guano Island. Where an undulating mass of human and animal flesh danced through the night, getting their kicks, before the morning came and they back-tracked their steps on the road paved with bad intentions... The road to Riot Jazz.

Every night at this joint was like the Eve of the Apocalypse - McBride would never admit to setting foot in the notorious watering-hell-hole. But last night was different. Was it all a twisted dream? A manic menagerie on the dance
floor... Russian sailors... deserters from some cold war in the future... painted-faced comrades... time- travelling bounty-hunters...? You wouldn’t believe it if it was branded on your mamma’s eyelids.

The hugely in-demand Little Dragon announce their new single ‘Blinking Pigs’ on 1 November. This year has seen the Swedish band rise to meteoric levels of credibility, with artists and producers from Damon Albarn and David Sitek requesting collaborations, to great effect – Pitchfork said the band’s work with Gorillaz tracks ‘Empire Ants’ and ‘To Binge’ are “two of the most arresting things here; they’re airy, elusive and amazingly beautiful” – and lead singer Yukimi Nagano has appeared on Sitek’s acclaimed Maximum Balloon project due for release in September. Add to this high praise from such luminaries as Big Boi (who was recommended them by none other than Dr Dre) P Diddy, Wendy & Lisa, DJ Shadow and The Bug…. Little Dragon are clearly visionaries that are proving quite the flame for these idiosyncratic moths!

New single and live favourite ‘Blinking Pigs’ will prove to be their crossover moment as it fuses all that they do best. What seemingly opens up as a slinky and percolating electro pop moment, soon gives way to a chorus that burrows deep under the skin. Maybe this is why Damon is so smitten?

B-side exclusive is a remix of ‘Never Never’ by SBTRKT (who will be supporting Little Dragon at their Koko show) that keeps the loose fabric of the song but attaches a dub laden undercarriage of epic proportions. It is a superb bookend to his recent work on Tinie Tempah’s ‘Pass Out’ & M.I.A’s ‘XXXO’ and easily one of the remixes of the year.

About Student Action Manchester:

Student Action Manchester is a student led volunteering organisation...where the students are in charge! We run loads of projects with the elderly, homeless, kids, people with learning disabilities and the environment! Since 1964 we have been working with our local communities given students the chance to have fun and help people from disadvantaged or marginalised groups.

Only this year we have started repairing bikes, helping out at Platt fields park, shopping and cooking with elderly people. Overall we run over 20 projects every week, all of which you can CHECK OUT HERE! . Increasing the funding we have will allow us to do so much more with all our projects, we will be bale to take the children from our local homeless refuge out to plays and the cinema, buy new equipments and arts and crafts materials for them and our four learning disabilities groups. Please support us and allow us to continue our great work!
